Reflections: So what is Sustainable Climate Financing and What is it not?

So here is the thing, we are in the midst of a Climate Crisis, You all know that right? And not because this generation deserves to be the one carrying the burden of our time. But we are not complaining, we do not wish to since each generation has had specific role in the preservation of humanity over the centuries. But now let's talk about SUSTAINABLE CLIMATE FINANCING! Sustainable Climate Financing is more than funds—it's a comprehensive strategy. Governments and other stakeholders like banks must recognize its essence: an intergenerational commitment. It's not just an immediate financial fix; it's about nurturing a mindset of stewardship and equity. This approach involves transferring financial and non-financial resources across generations. Why does this matter? It ensures lasting impact by maintaining funding for climate resilience, fostering innovation, and integrating diverse perspectives into environmental solutions. By investing in knowledge transfer and mentor...

Why Local People, Local Problems, Local Solutions?

The stage is set for an African revolution. And this one is not specifically in the historical sense of war and chaos. We can call it a renaissance, awakening or whatever term you best wish to give it. But deep down it is genuinely expressing the realities of a changing landscape within most African communities. And here we speak from a vantage point of recognizable experience. At FOREZAVA, we've been fortunate to witness firsthand the transformative impact of empowering local communities in addressing pressing challenges, particularly in climate-smart and conservation agriculture initiatives within rural Vihiga County, Kenya. Our approach pivots around recognizing the intrinsic value of local knowledge and expertise in combating the climate crisis. Vihiga County's agricultural landscape faces the direct brunt of changing climate patterns, threatening food security and livelihoods. However, our journey here has illuminated a fundamental truth: local problems necessitate local s...

The C in AgriCulture stands for Cool and Classy.

A true story. While attending the Young African Leadership Initiative RLC Training  our founder was struck at how many faces it turned by virtue of introducing himself as a farmer. He could see that every turned face raised so many questions. "So you are a Farmer right?" "Does it pay much?" "How big is your land?" "You do not do anything else on the side?" Questions written on faces and some loudly asked. For young people in this generation farming and by extension agriculture is as archaic as the engineering of the agrarian revolution. Who pumps water with a rotating water blade anymore? Who tills the land for income? Who sweats and dirties hands to feed the nation? It is a common belief that farming is dirty and unsustainable. And this belief has gone deeper into the impressions of the powers that be. Market systems are designed to disadvantage the producer, after all they are just raw fruits and vegetables right? Or seeds at some point. This h...

Over the past few years, we've witnessed the transformative power of community involvement in shaping ambitious goals. Our aim to empower youth and women through CSCA remains steadfast, yet challenges often impede progress. It's not merely about financial means; it's harnessing our community's collective potential. We've found that fostering shared aspirations among young individuals yields remarkable results—be it rallying for tree planting or nurturing youth-driven artistic endeavors. Community engagement stands as a potent tool for sustainable development, despite the occasional hurdles it presents. Our directive remains clear: LET'S BUILD A COMMUNITY. It's the c...

WE ARE BACK.

As part of a green revolution that swept across Kenya on November 13th, 2023, spearheaded by the country's president FOREZAVA undertook a monumental tree-planting initiative, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape and hearts of the community. With unwavering determination, over 2000 fruit and indigenous tree seedlings found their new home along the banks of River Ezava, a vital step in safeguarding the delicate riparian ecosystem. Local leaders, including the esteemed Hon Clement Sloya MP Sabatia Constituency, and passionate Members of County Assembly Hon Gidali and Hon. Nkrumah, rallied behind FOREZAVA's eco-conscious cause. Their united front showcased the power of community collaboration in tackling environmental challenges. This green spectacle not only transformed the riverbanks but also served as a poignant reminder of the urgent need to protect, rehabilitate, and conserve riparian lands. FOREZAVA's commitment to environmental stewardship echoed far beyond the eve...

AFTERTHOUGHT: AFRICAN CLIMATE SUMMIT

In Nairobi's heart, they gathered, so grand, For the African Climate Summit, in this uncanny land. Leaders and dignitaries, from all around they came, To discuss climate change, and stake their claim to fame. But oh, what a circus, what a comedy show, As some leaders skipped out, like a disappearing glow. South African and Ugandan, they were nowhere to be seen, Leaving the summit's unity, a little less pristine. As a would-be delegate, I had plans so grand, But accreditation vanished, like footprints in the sand. Confusion reigned within, in the organizing fold, And I watched from afar, as the story slowly told. The irony, my friend, it's a bitter pill to swallow, As 25,000 flocked in, like there's no tomorrow. Flights and hotels, and cattle meat galore, All contributing to a climate crisis we abhor. They spoke of change, of policies and might, But actions spoke louder, in this Nairobi night. If they truly care, as their speeches implore, Why not meet online, and save ...

Upholding Sustainability: Transitioning from Mining to Conservation Agriculture in Vihiga County

In a decisive move aimed at safeguarding the environment and upholding the law, the goverment has taken the commendable step of suspending artisanal mining activities. This action comes in the wake of the arrest and subsequent charging of foreign individuals involved in illegal mining within the 'mkichutu'. While this decision might initially evoke discomfort among the local populace due to the potential loss of livelihoods, it is crucial to recognize the broader benefits it brings to the community. The suspension of artisanal mining activities is a clear indication of the government's commitment to environmental preservation and sustainable development. Artisanal mining, often conducted without adherence to ecological regulations, can lead to soil erosion, deforestation, and water pollution, thereby endangering the delicate balance of local ecosystems. By halting such activities, the government has taken a significant stride towards protecting its natural resources for fu...
