Sports4Ezava: Moving Beyond the Moment – Building Real Climate Action from the Ground Up

In recent years, we’ve seen a growing wave of events around the world where people come together under the banner of “sports for climate action.” From marathons to football tournaments and even indoor games — all carrying slogans of sustainability, planting symbolic trees, and advocating for environmental awareness.

These efforts are exciting, yes, but one can’t help but ask: Do they really get to the root of the issue?
Are they driven by a genuine desire to solve the climate crisis, or do they simply serve as quick bursts of media attention — beautiful photos, hashtags, and applause, followed by silence once the cameras go off?

At Forezava, when we launched Sports4Ezava, we wanted to do something different — something that would last beyond the photo opportunities and celebrity tweets. Our goal was clear: to mobilize youth engagement in climate action through sports, while nurturing community ownership and lasting impact.

A Different Kind of Energy

Our model is simple but powerful. A group of youth from any given area proposes an activity that can help raise awareness about local environmental challenges. Together, we refine their idea, build a detailed plan, and develop an implementation framework that aligns with both the local context and the spirit of sportsmanship.

This isn’t just about kicking a ball or running a race — it’s about planting ideas, building teams, and growing change from the ground up.

One story stands out. During our last Sports4Ezava edition, two young agripreneurs — Mr. Mwanje and Ms. Mwanika from North East Bunyore — approached us with a question: “What is possible?”

Rather than giving them an answer, we challenged them to find it. Within days, they had listed available teams, reached out to coaches, referees, and local supporters, and even drafted a concept note for the event. Their energy was unstoppable.

In just three weeks, we had a solid plan — team briefings, communication channels, match schedules, and even a shared understanding of how to integrate climate conversations into the event. It was youth-led, youth-owned, and incredibly organized.

When Sports and Sustainability Collide

Our launch coincided with Mazingira Day, and it couldn’t have been better timed. Players, coaches, and fans didn’t just show up to play — they showed up to plant trees, to discuss conservation, and to commit to protecting their environment.

For five consecutive weekends, the football pitch became more than a playing field — it became a classroom, a community hub, and a catalyst for change. Each match sparked new conversations, new friendships, and a renewed sense of responsibility toward our environment.

This is what genuine engagement looks like. It’s not about grand promises, but small, consistent actions that transform communities over time.

Beyond the Spotlight

The truth is, too many initiatives today are momentary actions — designed to impress rather than impact. They look good on posters but do little to empower those who matter most: the local youth who live the reality of climate change every day.

These “quick-win” projects often overshadow grassroots movements that lack flashy publicity but are quietly doing the hard work. It’s time we changed that narrative.

At Forezava, we believe real climate action starts where the people are.
It’s in the small towns, the school pitches, and the local communities where passion meets purpose.

And so, as we look ahead, we remain committed to amplifying these local efforts — grassroots people solving grassroots problems with grassroots solutions.

Where Do We Go Next?

Our journey with Sports4Ezava is far from over. The question now is: how can we make it even bigger, even better, even more impactful?

We invite young people, local partners, and organizations to join us — to co-create new activities, expand our reach, and bring together more communities through the uniting power of sports and environmental stewardship.

Because when sports meet purpose, when play meets planet — change becomes unstoppable.
