The Environmental Impact of Unregulated Mining Activities along River Ezava

Sexual Rights Violation in Rural Vihiga County: The Environmental Impact of Unregulated Mining Activities along River Ezava

In Vihiga County, Kenya the unregulated mining activities along the riparian land of River Ezava have not only resulted in environmental degradation but have also led to the violation of sexual rights among the local population. These activities have had a profound impact on the community, particularly women and girls, who are disproportionately affected by the negative consequences of such practices. However, amidst these challenges, an up-and-coming youth-led organization called Forezava Foundation has emerged, working diligently to address these issues and offer sustainable solutions through engaging youth and women in Climate Smart and Conservation Agriculture.

Environmental Degradation and Sexual Rights Violation:

The unregulated mining activities along the riparian land of River Ezava have caused severe environmental degradation, including deforestation, pollution, and soil erosion. These activities often disregard legal regulations and proper environmental assessment, leading to the destruction of ecosystems and the disruption of the local community's way of life. Unfortunately, the consequences extend beyond environmental harm and have given rise to a range of human rights violations, particularly the violation of sexual rights.

Due to the influx of miners and the instability brought about by the mining activities, incidents of sexual harassment, exploitation, and assault have escalated in the area. Women and girls, in particular, face heightened vulnerability as they become targets for sexual violence, human trafficking, and other forms of abuse. The lack of proper regulation and oversight has perpetuated a climate of fear and insecurity, jeopardizing the fundamental rights and dignity of individuals within the community.

Our Solution:

Recognizing the urgent need to address these interconnected issues, Forezava Foundation, a dynamic youth-led organization, has stepped up to offer innovative solutions that promote climate-smart practices and conservation agriculture while empowering youth and women.

1. Awareness and Education:

Forezava Foundation recognizes that knowledge is power. They conduct comprehensive awareness campaigns and educational programs to inform the community about the link between unregulated mining, environmental degradation, and sexual rights violation. By raising awareness, they empower individuals to understand their rights and take action.

2. Youth and Women Empowerment:

The foundation actively engages youth and women in Climate Smart and Conservation Agriculture. Through training programs and capacity-building initiatives, they equip participants with sustainable farming techniques, environmental conservation practices, and entrepreneurship skills. By involving the youth and women, Forezava Foundation creates a space for them to reclaim their agency, foster economic independence, and advocate for their rights.

3. Advocacy and Policy Engagement:

Forezava Foundation plays a crucial role in advocating for stronger regulatory frameworks and policies to protect the environment and promote sexual rights. They engage in dialogue with local authorities, collaborate with other organizations, and raise their collective voice to influence policy changes that address the root causes of these challenges.

4. Creating Alternative Livelihoods:

Forezava Foundation promotes income-generating activities that are environmentally friendly, such as sustainable agriculture and agroforestry practices. By providing alternative livelihood options, they reduce the dependency on destructive mining activities and create sustainable economic opportunities for the community.

The unregulated mining activities along the riparian land of River Ezava in rural Vihiga County have resulted in environmental degradation and the violation of sexual rights, particularly among women and girls. However, through the dedicated efforts of Forezava Foundation, there is hope for positive change. By engaging youth and women in Climate Smart and Conservation Agriculture, the foundation not only addresses the environmental impact but also empowers individuals, promotes sustainable livelihoods, and advocates for the protection of sexual rights. Through their work, Forezava Foundation is paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive, and environmentally sustainable future for rural Vihiga County.

No Opportunities? Or just lazy, entitled Youth...

Yesterday, I rode a bicycle for over 25 kilometers . Not on some fancy cycling trail or in a city marathon, but through the rugged countryside, under a sky that seemed determined to drown me. The heavens opened wide, the rain poured, and within minutes, I was soaked to the bone. Mud splashed with every turn of the wheel, my legs burned, and every car that passed left me looking more like a stray dog than a man with purpose. Why endure all this? Because I was headed to meet a group of talented young people —people I have worked with for months, helping them shape ideas around technology and the lot into real enterprises. It was their meeting. They set it up. They picked the time. They picked the place. I showed up, dripping wet, hungry, exhausted… and alone (mostly). No calls. No messages. No apologies. Just silence. And yet, when the dust—or rather mud—settles, these are the same young people who will look at society and claim, “There are no opportunities for us.” The Myth of Limit...

So What Next, They Ask? Empowering the Kenyan Youth: The Path Forward After the Gen Z Revolutio n

The dust is slowly settling. After weeks of an unforeseen protests, which will go down in Kenya's history, we can all agree that things will never be the same again. Revolutions have occurred in this country, but none reached the level that Gen Z has driven us to. Or is it just momentary excitement? As active participants in this particular revolution, young people are being asked: what’s next? While the question sounds honest and well-intentioned, it echoes old narratives. Who will you crown to represent you in the upcoming cabinet nominations? Who will be your voice of reason within the corridors of power? What will you intentionally bring as suggestions, only to be heard and ignored in the dialogue forums? While this uproar has shaken power to its core, those who wield it are exploring all possibilities to retain it. They will lure the most vicious protesters into unsaid traps. They will create spaces for the most popular on digital platforms. Slowly but surely, they will brand ...
